Methods in analytical laboratories often require a multitude of tools and chemicals. For a variety of niche applications, there has been a demonstration of a way a particular step can be done. Yet the pursuit often stopped before optimization, and other laboratories have to do the same work all over. This applies to MALDI mass spectrometry imaging sample preparation too. In our opinion, MALDI-MSI is a key technology for personalized medicine. User hurdles have to be overcome to unveil the full potential of this technology.
